Teacher Guide

Review the reasons we use the passive voice and give some examples of where it's often heard - news reports, business writing, instructions, scientific writing and anytime the emphasis is on the action not who/what did it.

Briefly review the present continuous tense and present perfect tense and go over the structures provided on the worksheet. Check that they remember what the past participle is, and where to find their reference list (lesson 9).

Have the students convert each sentence into the passive form, maintaining the verb tense. Check for grammatical or spelling errors and have them read their answers out loud.

Lesson Plan

:

21 Key Reading Part 5

05mins - Introduction: Speaking practice: Allow each student 30 seconds to talk about themselves. They should describe who they are, what the like, where they live and why they want to learn English.

05mins - Review the online homework. What topics were discussed? Was the homework easy, medium or difficult? Answer any questions the students may have.05mins - Review: definitely - probably - perhaps - likely - will - might - chance - won’t. Have each student make predictions about the year 2040, practising the correct use of these terms.

10mins - Review: Passive speaking - Correct tense of 'to be' + past participle. We use the passive when:

  • We don't know who did something. Ex: My phone was stolen.
  • The action is more important than who did it. Ex: The school was built in 1889.
  • It is obvious who or what did something. Ex: Justin Bieber is known for his music.

05mins - Activity: Famous facts - students invent facts for people or countries using the passive voice. (E.g. The hotdog eating competition was held at the Coney Island,This song was made by Ariana Grande, Etc.)

10mins - Worksheet: 21 passive speaking

15mins - Test: 21 reading practice - part 5 - review the answers.

05mins - Warm down: what will you do this weekend?

00mins - Homework: complete the next section of the online homework.
