Special Project - Recipes
Baking with students is a delightful and educational activity. This recipe is for a traditional New Zealand sweet slice. Students will love learning about another culture as you work together. This activity works well with students of all ages, with English levels from A2 to B2.
We have carefully simplified all of our recipes to custom-make them for ESL learners. We've taken out all unnecessary vocabulary and kept to level-appropriate terms. You'll find more recipes and other creative projects on our website (register for free).
The project includes the recipe and a worksheet with some useful kitchen vocabulary to match to definitions.
This is a NO OVEN recipe so can be made in the classroom and then popped into a fridge to set.
Adapt the verbal instructions to target key vocabulary (e.g. verbs, nouns, prepositions etc). For example, if you're working on Prepositions, emphasise them in your instructions:
Before starting, wash your hands
Take all the ingredients out of the cupboards
Put a bowl on the bench top
Pour the coconut into the bowl
Mix the lollies through the mixture
Put the cake into the fridge
