01 Advanced Reading Part 2

10mins - Introduction: Cambridge Advanced Examination. Discuss lesson rules and expectations. Explain the process for online homework and when it’s due.

Speaking part 1: general conversation. Ask questions about daily life, interests or experiences. What are your hobbies? What do you enjoy studying?

10mins - Review: Simple and continuous tenses - make a diagram on the whiteboard to illustrate the use of each tense.

Present continuous - a temporary state, an action in progress

Present simple - a permanent state, a habit or regular event

Past continuous - an action in progress at a past point

Past simple - completed past action, past situation that doesn’t exist now, repeated past action.

Create an example sentence for each definition.

Ex: Present continuous: I’m working at home while our office is being renovated. (temporary state.) I’m phoning from the train. (action in progress)

10mins: Review: Past perfect tenses

Present perfect - a past situation relevant to the present, a recent action with consequences for the present, a situation continuing into the present.

Past perfect - Past event before another past event

(2.) How long an action has been in progress.

(3) a completed action or series of actions when we are interested in their result. (I’ve called the bus company a number of times to complain)

Past perfect continuous -

(1) to talk about an action in progress over a period up until a particular point. (I’d been waiting for over an hour when they announced the train had been cancelled) **please note the specific mention of time is necessary for this use.

(2) How many times something has happened in a period up to a particular past time. (I’d spoken to her only a couple of times before then.)

10mins - Worksheet: 01 past tenses

15mins - Test: 01 reading practice
