24 Advanced Writing Part 2

15mins: Introduction:

Online homework: Discuss any problems or difficulties the student may be having.

Independent reading: Ask the student about what they have read in English during the last week. If you are reading a novel together, discuss the assigned reading and any vocabulary words/ writing assignments.

Part 3:

Here are some aspects of modern life and a question for you to discuss -

1. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each aspect of modern life? (2 mins)

(write the following list on the board)

1. medicine

2. computers and mobile phones

3. ready meals

4. electricity

5. cars

Now you have about a minute to decide which two aspects best illustrate that modern life has both advantages and disadvantages. (1 minute)

Part 4: (use prompt questions as necessary - conversation should last about 5 minutes)

1. Which aspects of life in the past, which no longer exist, do you think were positive?2. Should developments in technology be restricted in any way? (Why? / Why not?)3. What sort of difficulties do young people face today, but that previous generations4. did not have to confront, or not to the same extent?5. Why do older people sometimes become nostalgic about the past?

Discuss colloquial phrases for having a conversation: - I couldn't agree more.- You took the words right out of my mouth.- I have a different perspective- I beg to differ.- In my experience- What are your thoughts on this?- Do you see what I mean?- My first reaction is...- It's something we've spoken about at school- Most people tend to think/ I tend to think- It's worth considering- It may sound cliche but- I think it's actually a misnomer that...

20mins: Worksheet: 24 writing practice - part 2. Discuss the 'review' exam task. Talk about the appropriate tone to use. Brainstorm some vocabulary words that would be useful for this topic.

E.g. venue, intensity, cacophony, harsh, smooth, electrifying, dull, dissonant, ambiance, mood, aura, flavour, rhythmic, melodic, facilities, performance, stage presence.

Have students write an outline and introduction paragraph. They should finish the writing for homework.

15mins: Worksheet: 24 reading practice - part 4 (if there's time 24 listening practice)

Checklist:

- what part of speech should this word be?

- Is it positive or negative?

- Does it need a prefix, suffix, or both?

05mins: Speaking: Discuss the following terms. Think of examples for each of them.

- pros and cons

- ups and downs

- give and take

- hustle and bustle

- peace and quiet

- mixed feelings

- black and white

05mins: Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time. Encourage students to do additional reading for vocabulary building outside of the lesson. News articles, short stories, and novels are all great examples.

00mins: Homework - complete the next section of the online homework
