25 Advanced Writing Part 1

15mins: Introduction:

Online homework: Discuss any problems or difficulties the student may be having.

Independent reading: Ask the student about what they have read in English during the last week. If you are reading a novel together, discuss the assigned reading and any vocabulary words/ writing assignments.

Speaking part 3:

Here are some situations where people need to take precautions -

1. Why do people need to take precautions in these situations? (2 mins)

(write the following list on the board)

1. travelling

2. changing jobs

3. getting married

4. starting a business

5. having children

Now you have about a minute to decide for which situation precautions are most important. (1 minute)

Part 4: (use prompt questions as necessary - conversation should last about 5 minutes)

1. Why is it important to always feel prepared?2. What situations in life are people usually unprepared for? Why?3. It is often said that a lot of personal damage could be prevented if people took the time to take precautions and prepare for the worst. Do you agree? Why/why not?4. How can technology help people feel prepared?

20mins: Worksheet: 25 listening practice - discuss the answers.

10mins: Worksheet: 25 reading practice - part 2 (finish for homework)

20mins: Worksheet: 25 writing practice - part 1 - Essay 220-260 words

Have students create an outline and write the first two paragraphs in the lesson. Students should finish the essay for homework.

Essay structure:

Introduction (1 paragraph)

Main body (2 paragraphs)

Conclusion (1 paragraph)

Tip - read the question and take notes carefully, so you're sure to know exactly what is being asked.

Look at the exam task and answer these questions:

1. How many of the ways listed in the notes do you have to refer to in your essay?

2. In what way is expressing an opinion not enough?

3. If you express one of the opinions listed, what should you do?

05mins: Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time. Encourage students to do additional reading for vocabulary building outside of the lesson. News articles, short stories, and novels are all great examples.
