Teacher Guide

Explain that the students need to consider who the report is for and write in an appropriate tone for the audience. They need to include factual information followed by suggestions and recommendations. They should give the report a title and organise their ideas into sections with subheadings. They need to explain the reason behind any recommendation they give.

Lesson Plan

:

17 Advanced Writing Part 2

05mins: Introduction: Speaking Part 1: (Choose a few questions from the list to warm up)

What types of television programmes do you think are worth watching?

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

What are the most popular sports in your country?

What do you do to keep fit and healthy?

Which part of your country would you recommend to tourists? … (Why?)

Do you think you would like to work in the travel industry? … (Why?/Why not?)

Online homework: Discuss any problems or difficulties the student may be having.

Independent reading: Ask the student about what they have read in English during the last week. If you are reading a novel together, discuss the assigned reading and any vocabulary words/ writing assignments.

10mins: Review: Writing an essay:

Writing part 2 - Part two offers a choice between three questions. Those questions could include: a letter, a proposal, a report, and a review.

Candidates will be expected to show awareness of the style and tone required, and must be prepared to demonstrate appropriate use of two or more of the following functions as specified in the task: describing, evaluating, hypothesising, persuading, expressing opinions, comparing, giving advice, justifying and judging priorities. Discuss what each of these functions means. Candidates must write 220–260 words.

Checklist:

  • Is it easy to read and follow?
  • Have you corrected all your spelling errors?
  • Did you answer the question?
  • Have you included complex grammar structures?
  • Have you used attention-grabbing vocabulary?
  • Is all the information relevant to the task?
  • Have you used an appropriate tone? (formal vs. informal language)
  • Have you remained inside the specified word-count?

30mins: Test: 17 writing practice - part 2

10mins - Review: Read the example essay together. Ask the student to grade the essay on each of the four grading categories (with a mark of 1-5): content, achievement, organisation and language. Now use the #9 Advanced help card to review the examiners comments. Mark the students' essay together. Ask the student to grade their own essay on each of the four categories.

05mins: Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time. Encourage students to do additional reading for vocabulary building outside of the lesson. News articles, short stories, and novels are all great examples.

00mins: Homework - complete the next section of the online homework

Test Tip

1) Part two may include any of the following: a letter/email, a proposal, a report or a review.

2) Candidates should cater their piece of writing towards a specific audience.

3) Candidates will be expected to display awareness of the style and tone required by each task.

4) Counting words wastes time, it's better to practice enough times that you feel like you can accurately judge the word count by just looking at the writing.

5) Encourage students to choose prompts/topics that match their interests and display their writing skills effectively.
