Teacher Guide

Page 1: In this part, there is an emphasis on locating specific information, detail, opinion and attitude in a text or a group of short texts. Ask the students to read out which phrases helped them to answer each question. Point out that there are some words that can be distractors.

Page 3: For the second exercise, explain that the students need to use the word provided, unchanged, within a phrase that completes the sentence in a way that it has the same meaning as the first sentence. The phrase they write must have between 3 and 6 words.

Lesson Plan

:

27 Advanced Reading Part 4

10mins: Introduction:

Online homework: Discuss any problems or difficulties the student may be having.

Independent reading: Ask the student about what they have read in English during the last week. If you are reading a novel together, discuss the assigned reading and any vocabulary words/ writing assignments.

Speaking part 2:

Use speaking help cards and prompts to have students practice Speaking Part 2. They'll be given a long turn, where they need to compare and contrast 2/3 photos, making sure to answer the overarching question. (Long turn, 1 minute)

Then they'll be given a short turn, where they have to answer a question based on their partner's photographs. (Short turn, 30 seconds)

15mins: Worksheet: 27 reading - part 4 - complete and discuss the answers.

20mins: Worksheet: 27 reading - part 8 - complete and discuss the answers.

Tips: Decide what method words for you! The questions are put before the text as a way to encourage you to read the questions first. If you find you have a hard time remembering the questions while reading the text, try reading the text first. There is no correct strategy, just the strategy that words best for you!

Use context clues to find the meaning of words you don't understand. Afterwords, use dictionary to search these words and check your conclusion.

10mins: Homework: Write a proposal (220-260 words)

Review the structure of a proposal. Have students write their 'four titles' and a few bullet points below each explaining what they plan to do/say in each paragraph.

Intro - Introduce the current situation or problem

Body - Describe the situation/problem

Suggestions - Offer new ideas or solutions

Conclusion - Make final recommendations/sum up

Task:

Your college currently doesn't provide enough support for students planning to spend time studying in another country. You see this notice in the library:

The college is planning to introduce a special course for students planning to spend time studying in another country. The college principal invites students to send a proposal outlining any problems students may face when studying abroad and suggesting ways in which the course could address these problems. A decision can then be made about what to include in the course. Write your proposal.

05mins: Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time. Encourage students to do additional reading for vocabulary building outside of the lesson. News articles, short stories, and novels are all great examples.

00mins: Homework - complete the next section of the online homework

Test Tip

1) In this part, there's an emphasis on locating specific information, detail and opinion or attitude in a text or group of short texts.

2) Avoid seeing this part as an exercise that merely requires you to match information. The task is designed to test understanding of the development of ideas, opinion and events rather than the recognition of individual words.

3) Skimming and scanning skills are very important for this task, as it requires re-finding information quickly and accurately. Help yourself by underlining and labelling information to the best of your abilities.

4) Some of the options may be correct for more than one answer.

5) You will need to match the questions with relevant information.
