Teacher Guide

Explain that the students need to use the word provided, unchanged, within a phrase that completes the sentence in a way that it has the same meaning as the first sentence. The phrase they write must have between 3 and 6 words.

Lesson Plan

:

41 Advanced Reading Part 4

10mins: Introduction:

Online homework: Discuss any problems or difficulties the student may be having.

Independent reading: Ask the student about what they have read in English during the last week. If you are reading a novel together, discuss the assigned reading and any vocabulary words/ writing assignments.

Speaking practice:

Review these two types of speaking situations.

Planned - A planned speaking situation is one in which the speaker knows about the subject beforehand, has had time to think about the conversation, and has organised what they are going to say.

Unplanned - An unplanned speaking situation is one which takes place at the moment. The speaker has to think on their feet, answering in regards to a topic they haven't had much time to think about.

Which situation do you think is more difficult to speak in - a planned situation, or an unplanned situation? Why?

Useful phrases: spur of the moment, out of the blue, think (sth) through, well-thought-out, clear and effective communication, to make a long story short, word-of-mouth, to be put on the spot, to catch someone off guard, out of thin air, from nowhere, stage fright, to speak off the cuff, to take something with a pinch of salt, off the top of (one's) head, get something off (one's) chest

15mins: Test: 41 reading practice - part 4

30mins: Module 2: Students will present their projects to the class. Each student will have between 5-7 minutes to present. Students will complete a peer evaluation worksheet during the presentations.

**05mins: **Homework - Students will write a self-evaluation about their project. They should reflect on what parts of their presentation were successful, as well as what parts could have been improved on.

**00mins: **Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time. Encourage students to do additional reading for vocabulary building outside of the lesson. News articles, short stories, and novels are all great examples.

Test Tip

1) Think about the voice - can you switch between active and passive voice?

2) Look at the words directly before and after the gap. If a past participle follows the gap, you know you'll need the auxiliary verb 'have/had' in your response.

3) Do not use fewer than three or more than six words.

4) Do not modify the key word in any way.

5) Contractions count as two words.

6) Keep in mind comparative forms, phrasal verbs and colloquial phrases.
