Teacher Guide

Explain that the students need to use the word provided, unchanged, within a phrase that completes the sentence in a way that it has the same meaning as the first sentence. The phrase they write must have between 3 and 6 words.

You work in the sales department of a large company. You have been asked to reply to this memo from the company's personnel officer:

INTERNAL MEMO

From: Personnel Officer

To: Sales Department

Owing to recent changes within the company we are experiencing some problems with staff motivation. Please write a report giving your opinion of the following suggestions for improving staff morale:

  1. A party for the whole department
  2. A weekend away for the most successful sales team
  3. A monetary prize for the best salesperson

I would appreciate any other suggestions.

Write the report to the Personnel Officer. (220-260 words)

**05mins: **Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time. Encourage students to do additional reading for vocabulary building outside of the lesson. News articles, short stories, and novels are all great examples.

Test Tip

1) Think about the voice - can you switch between active and passive voice?

2) Look at the words directly before and after the gap. If a past participle follows the gap, you know you'll need the auxiliary verb 'have/had' in your response.

3) Do not use fewer than three or more than six words.

4) Do not modify the key word in any way.

5) Contractions count as two words.

6) Keep in mind comparative forms, phrasal verbs and colloquial phrases.
