10mins - Conversation: Debate: Where is the best place to go on holiday? Students should think of at least three reasons why the holiday they have chosen is the best type of holiday to go on. What are some things people need to consider when planning a holiday? (e.g. transport, time available, who to travel with, what to bring, etc.)
15mins - Review: Review the past tenses and their uses.
- Simple past (+ED/irregular) I ate pizza on Tuesday.
- Past continuous ('to be' + verbING) I was eating pizza when the dog began to bark.
- Present perfect (have/has + past participle) I have eaten pizza three times this week.
- Present perfect continuous (have/has+been+verbING) I have been eating pizza since I was a child.
- Past perfect (had + past participle) I wasn't hungry at dinner time because I had eaten pizza with my friends after school.
- Past perfect continuous. (had+been+verbING) I had been eating pizza when I heard the news that school would be closed the next day.
Ask students to write their own example sentences for each tense.

We are looking for stories for our new English-language magazine for teenagers. Your story must begin with the sentence:
Nick had been out in the sailing boat before, but this was his first trip on his own.
The story must include:
- a noise
- a surprise
(140-190 words)
When time is up, have students read their stories out loud and vote on who has written the best one. If time runs out, ask students to finish the assignment for homework.
