A defining clause uses who, which or that. They tell us some essential information about the things or people they refer to. Ex: 'I like the picture that hangs next to Margaret's portrait the best.' If we remove the words 'that hangs next to Margaret's portrait', we don't know which picture it is.
A non-defining clause uses who or which. They tell us some extra information about the things or people they refer to. Ex: 'The next painting shows Edmund's wife Margaret, who he married in 1605'. If we remove 'who he married in 1605' we still know who he is talking about.
Ask students to write one defining and one non-defining relative clause about two of their classmates.
Examples:
Sarah is the girl who is writing on the blackboard. (Defining)
Adam, who was born in Leeds, is a great football player. (Non-defining)
