Teacher Guide

Talk about what adding 'up' or 'out' to a verb does to the meaning and try some simple examples. Have the students read the sentences and check that they have understood the meaning of each sentence and therefore have an idea of what needs to be expressed in the gap. See if they have any ideas about which phrasal verbs to use and help them if not. Make sure to spend some time on any they find difficult and provide further examples of how it's used. Have the students note down 2 or 3 that are new for them and write example sentences using them. They can add to this list each lesson. Make sure to revisit these phrasal verbs and encourage your students to use some from their list every lesson in conversation or writing tasks.

After completing the second part of the worksheet ask your students to read out the complete sentence with their chosen phrasal verb replacement. Ask them how it sounds: more natural? more colloquial? more common?
