Give a brief overview of the verb tenses: present, simple past, present perfect and past perfect. Explain that in spoken and written English we might come across a mixture of tenses, depending on the narrative. Connect each tense to its main purpose and review the structures if needed.
Have the students try to read over the text to get a sense of what it is about, then to revisit each gap and choose a form of the verb provided that they think fits. Do a few together to start with. Show them they can test multiple options and eliminate the ones that don't sound right. Have them take turns reading the completed text out loud and help them to correct any errors they might have made.
