10mins - Debate: Students are split into two groups. Quietly tell each group their position. Give the groups 5 minutes to write and research useful vocabulary words. When the 5 minutes is up, have a debate.
1) Advertising agency: A major retail fashion industry which makes clothing and accessories for teens is about to release a new product. (Decide together what this will be - a pair of shoes, a new backpack, a new winter jacket, etc.) Your agency is in the running to create their TV commercial and you need to prepare your ideas to pitch to the company. There should be a big budget, so think about including famous people and exotic locations.
2) Street Fashion: You think advertising agencies are untrustworthy because the last two campaigns you have paid for were utter disasters. One used a famous football player, who was accused of throwing a game in exchange for money. Another, filmed at a great cost in South America, did not attract appeal to anyone in the target age group. Ask tough questions to ensure this agency shares your vision.

Asking permission - Can/could/may I?
Making requests - Can/will/could/would you?
Making offers - Can/shall/why don't I? Would you like me to?
Making suggestions - Let's/shall I/we?
Giving orders or advice - you must/had better/ought to/should/could
10mins - Activity: Mother may I? The teacher will act as the students' parents. Each student must try to ask permission to go to a concert on a school night. Students should make a strong argument, and use modals in the correct form.
