Teacher Guide

Give a brief overview of the verb tenses: present, simple past, present perfect and past perfect. Explain that in spoken and written English we might come across a mixture of tenses, depending on the narrative style. Connect each tense to its main purpose and review the structures if needed. Review phrasal verbs and show how they are converted into the past.

Have the students read over the text to get a sense of what it is about, then revisit each gap and choose a form of the verb provided that they think fits. Do a few together to start with. Show them they can test multiple options and eliminate the ones that don't sound right. Have them take turns reading the completed text out loud and help them to correct any errors they might have made.

Lesson Plan

:

44 First Reading Part 2

15mins - Conversation: Split the class into pairs, and assign each student the role of 'Student A' or 'Student B'.

Student A: You are about to attend a job interview for an international sports event in Canada. The job will be one of the following: office administrator, interpreter, first-aid worker, or cook. You really want a job, but you don't know which one you might get. Spend a few minutes thinking about the sort of skills you might need for each position.

Student B: You are going to interview someone for a job at an international sports event in Canada. Tell the interviewee what the job involves (choose one: office administrator, interpreter, first-aid worker, or cook). Ask the interviewee about relevant experience, qualifications, general commitment, and suitability for the job you have in mind. Decide on a scale of 0-5 how the interviewee has performed, according to these criteria: Experience, qualifications, commitment, interpersonal skills, and enthusiasm.

10mins - Review: Phrasal verbs - use a root verb and ask students to brainstorm possible phrasal verbs. Write each phrasal verb and definition on a flashcard. Play taboo with the flashcards to review.

10mins - Worksheet: 13 mixed tenses

20mins - Test: 44 reading practice - part 2

05mins - Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time.

00mins - Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.
