Teacher Guide

Have the students choose which of the words provided feels more natural for them in each gap and then discuss why the other options are not correct. Explain that the need to pay attention to the word that follows the gap, For example, 'listen' is followed by 'to', but the other options don't work with a 'to' afterwards ('watch to', 'look to' or 'hear to').

Lesson Plan

:

05 First Reading Part 1

10mins - Conversation: Imagine there has been an alien takeover. What do you think the aliens would do to change life on earth? Would they bring improvements or destruction to our planet? Develop an argument, and defend your position.

05mins - Homework review: discuss any questions or problems.

10mins - Revision: Linking expressions: Used to bring cohesion to phrases and sentences, connecting information by expressing reason, result, purpose and cause and effect. Introduce familiar linking words, and have the students use them in sentences. (Because, as, so, since, therefore, such, enough, too).

10mins - Activity: Murder Mystery. Split the students into two teams. Introduce vocabulary that will be needed in the activity: Murderer, victim, crime scene, motive, accident, mystery. Each team is given a list of information about a murder. Ex: baseball bat, night time, horse, mansion, a banana peel (be creative). Tell each team to keep their list a secret. The students must use the information to develop a theory about how a murder happened, using linking expressions. After a few minutes, have the two teams of detectives 'debate' the murder mystery. One by one, students go back and forth, using their 'information' to explain what could have happened. Each student must use a linking expression when they present their new piece of information. Ex: T1: We know there was a banana peel at the crime scene. Therefore, I believe the victim was eating a snack. T2: There was a banana peel, however, I believe the victim slipped on the peel, and this is why they could not escape.

10mins - Worksheet: 05 linking expressions

10mins - Test: 05 reading practice - part 1

05mins - Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time!

00mins - Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework. Tell the students to imagine there has been an alien takeover. Ask them to write one paragraph explaining how the takeover has happened, and whether or not they think aliens could be good leaders. Ask the students to use linking expressions to defend their positions.
