Lesson Plan

:

14 First Listening Part 3

10mins - Conversation: Speaking part 1 - Do you use the internet to learn new things? Do you prefer working on your own or with other people? What do you think would be the most interesting job to do? Do you find it easy to study where you live? (Ask each student one question and have them answer with a 30-second response. Speaking part 1 is designed to help the students relax and speak about familiar information. Students must provide more than a 'yes' or 'no' answer during this task.

05mins - Review the online homework. What topics were discussed? Was the homework easy, medium or difficult? Answer any questions the students may have.

05mins - Review: Phrasal verbs and linking expressions. Use flashcards for reinforcement.

05mins- Review: Adverbs: Adjectives (happy) tell us about a noun. Adverbs (happily) tell us about a verb, an adjective or another adverb. Adverbs can give us information about time (when?), place (where?), manner (how?), and frequency (how often?). Most adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an adjective. (sadly, safely, hopefully). There is a spelling change in adjectives ending in y or able/ible. (angrily, miserably) An adjective ending in -ly (friendly, likely, lively, lonely, lovely, silly, ugly) cannot be made into an adverb. We must use them in an adverbial phrase instead. (He laughed in a silly way. He acted in a friendly way)

05mins - Activity - Give students an adjective and a noun - "happy dog". Challenge the students to see how many adverbs they can think of to describe the phrase. Ex: Happy dog -- 'Always very happy dog,' 'Constantly happy dog,' 'cheerfully happy dog' 'Unbelievably happy dog,' etc. Encourage students to try to make the longest adverb chain possible.

10mins - Worksheet: 14 adverbs

15mins - Test: 14 listening practice - part 3

05mins - Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time!

00mins - Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.

Test Tip

  1. Students will hear short extracts and need to match them to the correct speaker. The speakers will all say different things related to a similar topic.
  2. Some information will be said in the recording that matches a wrong answer. Students will need to be careful about small details in what they hear.
  3. Students should try to predict what each person might say, and make notes about how the people felt about what they're saying. Do they have positive or negative feelings?
