Teacher Guide

Have the students read the descriptions of different beaches and underline any words or phrases that are unfamiliar. Discuss the different features of the beaches together and then have them answer the questions and indicate which passages helped them find the answer to each one.

Lesson Plan

:

20 First Reading Part 7

10mins - Conversation: Chinese scientists have recently made new advancements in genetic studies - they have successfully cloned a monkey. Scientists have cloned other animals in the past, including a famous Scottish sheep named 'Dolly'. The monkey is different because it is the first primate to ever be successfully cloned. The topic has raised discussion about whether or not cloning is ethically moral. What would happen if we cloned a human? What are some ways cloning can benefit medical advancements? Do you believe it is acceptable to experiment with animals? Why or why not? Support your claim.

05mins - Review the online homework. What topics were discussed? Was the homework easy, medium or difficult? Answer any questions the students may have.

05mins - Review: Phrasal verbs and linking expressions. Use flashcards for reinforcement.

10mins - Review: Past tenses:

Discuss the differences between these examples.

  • past simple - verb+ED/irregular form - I wanted pizza.
  • past continuous - was/were+verb+ING - I was waiting until she arrived before I ate the pizza.
  • present perfect - has/have+PP - I've eaten pizza before.
  • present perfect continuous - has/have been+verb+ING - I have been waiting to eat a pizza for two hours.
  • past perfect - had+PP - I felt sick because I had eaten the entire pizza.
  • past perfect continuous - had been+verb+ING I had been waiting to eat the pizza for most of the afternoon because she had been late.

05mins - Worksheet: 20 - Past Tenses - Finish for homework

05mins - Introduction: provide an overview of the format of Reading: part 7 - this section tests your ability to find particular information in a text. You need to understand detail, attitudes, and opinions in the questions. You need to match them to the part of the text which expresses the same idea.15mins - Test: 20 Reading - Part 7 - review the answers.

05mins - Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time!

00mins - Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.

Test Tip

1) There will be at least one answer for each text, so check again if you have one text with no answers in it.

2) Read the questions first so you know what you're looking for, and then scan the texts for information.

3) Underline your answers in the text.

4) Remind students that pacing is important. They should still have time at the end of the test to check through their answers in all of the Reading and Use of English sections. Tediously reading through part 7 can be detrimental if the test time is running out. Focus on scanning techniques for this part.
