Teacher Guide

Teach that in certain cases we use the gerund and in other cases we use the infinitive. Give some example verbs that are usually followed by one or the other. Explain that gerunds are often used when actions are real, fixed, or completed (e.g. I enjoy swimming), after prepositions of place and time, and to replace the object or subject of the sentence. Infinitives are often used when actions are unreal, abstract or future (e.g. She wants to go to Spain), after many adjectives and to show purpose.

Lesson Plan

:

33 First Reading Part 1

10mins - Conversation: Debate: Where is the best place to go on holiday? Students should think of at least three reasons why the holiday they have chosen is the best type of holiday to go on. What are some things people need to consider when planning a holiday? (e.g. transport, time available, who to travel with, what to bring, etc.)

15mins - Review: Review the past tenses and their uses.

- Simple past (+ED/irregular) I ate pizza on Tuesday.

- Past continuous ('to be' + verbING) I was eating pizza when the dog began to bark.

- Present perfect (have/has + past participle) I have eaten pizza three times this week.

- Present perfect continuous (have/has+been+verbING) I have been eating pizza since I was a child.

- Past perfect (had + past participle) I wasn't hungry at dinner time because I had eaten pizza with my friends after school.

- Past perfect continuous. (had+been+verbING) I had been eating pizza when I heard the news that school would be closed the next day.

Ask students to write their own example sentences for each tense.

10mins - Workbook: 02 mixed tenses

15mins - Test: 34 Reading Practice part 1

05mins - Homework (optional): Writing part 2.

We are looking for stories for our new English-language magazine for teenagers. Your story must begin with the sentence:

Nick had been out in the sailing boat before, but this was his first trip on his own.

The story must include:

- a noise

- a surprise

(140-190 words)

When time is up, have students read their stories out loud and vote on who has written the best one. If time runs out, ask students to finish the assignment for homework.

05mins - Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time.

00mins - Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.
