Teacher Guide

Explain that the students need to use the word provided, unchanged, within a phrase that completes the sentence in a way that it has the same meaning as the first sentence. The phrase they write must have between 2 and 5 words.

Lesson Plan

:

34 First Reading Part 4

**10mins - **Conversation: Interview a partner - Students have five minutes to learn and record as much information as possible about another classmate. When the time is up, students will trade papers with their partner and correct any errors. (grammatical or factual). When they are finished, the students will present their partners to the class.

**10mins - **Review: Relative clauses - Defining and Non-defining.

A defining clause uses who, which or that. They tell us some essential information about the things or people they refer to. Ex: 'I like the picture that hangs next to Margaret's portrait the best.' If we remove the words 'that hangs next to Margaret's portrait', we don't know which picture it is.

A non-defining clause uses who or which. They tell us some extra information about the things or people they refer to. Ex: 'The next painting shows Edmund's wife Margaret, who he married in 1605'. If we remove 'who he married in 1605' we still know who he is talking about.

Ask students to write one defining and one non-defining relative clause about two of their classmates.

Examples:

Sarah is the girl who is writing on the blackboard. (Defining)

Adam, who was born in Leeds, is a great football player. (Non-defining)

10mins - Workbook: 03 relative clauses

15mins - Test: 34 reading practice - part 4

10mins - Game: Students will write three sentences using relative clauses to describe a person, place, or thing. Then, they will read their clues out loud. The other students have to guess what is being described. Example: It's a place which has a wide range of different landscapes. It's a place that many people visit from all over the world. The Queen, who is very old, was born there.

**05mins - **Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time.

**00mins - **Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.

Test Tip

1) Think about the voice - can you switch between active and passive voice?

2) Look at the words directly before and after the gap. If a past participle follows the gap, you know you'll need the auxiliary verb 'have/had' in your response.

3) Do not use fewer than two or more than five words.

4) Do not modify the key word in any way.
