Teacher Guide

Sometimes several of the answers seem possible but if the students read the passage again and pay attention to the details, they will find that there is always only one correct response - often the other responses could be assumed but are not stated explicitly in the text. The answers are found in order in the text.

Lesson Plan

:

40 First Reading Part 5

**10mins - **Conversation: True or false. Discuss the following personal statements with the students. The students should decide whether each statement is true for them, and explain why or why not.

1. I always get out of bed early in the morning.

2. If I had some money, the first thing I would buy is a fast car.

3. I'm worse at English than I am at maths.

4. I'm always in trouble for forgetting things.

5. I'm not afraid of anything.

6. I think I'm broad-minded.

7. I must try to work harder.

8. I like to follow fashion trends.

9. Books interest me more than video-games.

10. Beach holidays are not for me.

10mins - Review - Gerunds and infinitives function as noun objects in a sentence.

Gerunds can act as the subject of a sentence.

'Walking is fun.'

'Eating pizza is my passion.'

Only gerunds are used after prepositions:

'I am interested in becoming a writer.'

'I forgive you for not telling the truth.'

'But' or 'except' require an infinitive:

'I had no choice but, to tell the truth.'

'She didn't stop except to fill the gas tank.'

Some verbs like love, hate, like, prefer can be followed by both a gerund and infinitive.

'I love going to the sea.'

'I love to go to the sea.'

When these verbs are used with 'would' or 'should', use the infinitive.

I would love to go to Japan.

Would you like to go to the cinema this weekend?

You should try to use neater handwriting.

**10mins: **Skill practice: Ask students to give example sentences for the following verbs:

- Infinitive verbs: agree, decide, wish, hope, deserve, expect, learn, need

- Gerund verbs:** **admit, advise, recommend, mention, deny, involve, suggest

10mins - Workbook: 09 gerunds and infinitives

15mins - Test: 40 reading practice

**05mins - **Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time.

**00mins - **Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.

1) You will need to read the text for detailed understanding of opinions, emotions and attitudes and tones.

2) The final question is usually about the global meaning of the text or opinion of the author.

3) The questions follow the order of the text, but there may be more than one answer in any given paragraph.
