Teacher Guide

Have the students read the descriptions of different beaches and underline any words or phrases that are unfamiliar. Discuss the different features of the beaches together and then have them answer the questions and indicate which passages helped them find the answer to each one.

Lesson Plan

:

48 First Reading Part 7

10mins - Conversation: Speaking part 2: In this part of the test, the interlocutor will give each student two photographs to talk about. Students will have a 'long turn' where they will talk about their photographs for one minute, and a 'short turn' where they will answer a question about their partner's photograph for thirty seconds.

Candidate A: (long turn) These photographs show people listening to music in different situations. I'd like you to compare the pictures, and say what you think the people are enjoying about listening to music in these situations.

Candidate B: (short turn) Do you ever go to concerts? (why, why not?)

Candidate B: (long turn)These photographs show people who are feeling happy for different reasons. I'd like you to compare the photographs, and say why you think people are feeling happy.

Candidate A: (short turn) Do you enjoy going to birthday parties?

**10mins - **Review: Mixed conditionals

Zero conditional: facts, absolute truths.

If + present simple, present simple.

- If you heat ice, it melts.

First conditional: Events we expect to happen.

If + present simple, will/can/going to + infinitive

- If it rains, the football match is going to be called off.

Second conditional: Events that are desirable but unlikely.

If + past simple, would + infinitive

- If I had a million dollars, I would buy a yacht.

Third conditional: Unreal things from the past that would have had a consequence.

If + past perfect, would + present perfect

- If I had been more careful, I wouldn't have had the accident.

10mins - Worksheet: 17 mixed conditionals

10mins - Activity: I didn't do it! Each student has been accused of a crime. Students must defend their innocence, while also explaining how they would have done the crime if they had been guilty.

Ex: I didn't steal the chocolate cake, but if I had stolen it, I would have also taken the bottle of milk.

15mins - Test: 48 reading practice - part 7

**05mins - **Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time.

**00mins - **Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.

Test Tip

1) There will be at least one answer for each text, so check again if you have one text with no answers in it.

2) Read the questions first so you know what you're looking for, and then scan the texts for information.

3) Underline your answers in the text.

4) Remind students that pacing is important. They should still have time at the end of the test to check through their answers in all of the Reading and Use of English sections. Tediously reading through part 7 can be detrimental if the test time is running out. Focus on scanning techniques for this part.
