Teacher Guide

Write an example sentence on the board and use different colours to underline or circle a noun, verb, adjective and adverb. Briefly and simply explain what each type of word is (e.g. a verb is an action word, a noun is a person, place or thing, an adjective describes a noun and an adverb describes a verb). Write some more examples and use the same colours as before to identify each part. Help the students to find the different parts each time.

Have the students read the story and think of a word to fit in each gap. It's designed to suggest relatively obvious choices. Help them when they need it. Explain that any verbs used should be in the simple past tense.

Have the students read their completed story out loud and check that it sounds natural with the words they chose for each gap.

Lesson Plan

:

01 Flyers Listening Part 1

05mins - Introduction: Where did you go for your summer holiday?

10mins - Revision: Adjective elimination. Split the class into two teams. A student from each team comes to the front of the room and is shown a picture from the teacher. The students have sixty seconds to write as many adjectives as he or she can think of. At the end of the minute, the students compare their lists. Any words on both lists are crossed out. Each student gets 1 point for any adjectives that remain.

10mins - Pre-Teach: Synonyms. Practice grouping adjectives together that have similar meanings. (large, big, fat, grand, huge, giant) (cold, frozen, chill, icy, frosty, crisp). Work to introduce new adjectives to the students that they can remember through understanding synonyms.

20mins - Worksheet: 01 adjectives - story writing

15mins - Test: 01 listening practice - part 1

05mins - Warm down: Goodbye, see you next time!

00mins - Homework: Find and define 5 adjectives you have never heard before. Write a sentence for each one.
