This worksheet is all about pronunciation. Many ESL learners tend to pronounce all regular verbs in the past with an emphasis on the final 'ed', resulting in some unusual sounds such as 'walk-ed'. This worksheet introduces the different sounds we use when pronouncing the 'ed' ending.
Most students will need to be guided by you to understand where to place each verb, but you can let them have a try first. After confirming which category each verb goes into, encourage the students to test it out - speaking the words out loud and even in examples. Some students find it useful if you clap with the syllables to show the difference - for example 'robbed' has only 1 syllable, but 'shouted' has 2.
In the second part, they need to write a story using the simple past. They probably won't know linking expressions yet, so can just focus on writing simple sentences using verbs from the box, or others they know. Tell them they can invent parts of their story if they don't feel very inspired by their actual weekend.
05mins - Conversation: If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Would you be a bad guy or good guy? What is an example of someone who is a superhero in real life?
05mins - Review the online homework. What topics were discussed? Was the homework easy, medium or difficult? Answer any questions the students may have.
15mins - Activity: Superhero timeline. Recall your 'superpower' form the introduction question. Create a timeline from when your superhero was born until the present. Label seven important events that happened in the superhero's life. Practice using the verb in the simple past. (E.g. when he/she was 7, he/she learned to fly)
