The students need to read the text and choose a word from the options provided to fill each gap. After helping them to complete the text, have them read it out loud and ask which words seem to fit naturally for them, and which don't. Help them to understand the words that are less familiar to them, and give other example sentences of how they are commonly used.
It's also a good idea to review the simple past form of some common verbs. Teach them some of the common uses of the word 'get'. Also help them to become comfortable with using 'is/are called' to describe the name of something.
Show them that sometimes two options seem to work, but if they pay attention to the word/s following the gap, they'll see that only one is correct. For example:
They ..... to go back (only 'have' fits because 'must' cannot be followed by an infinitive)
....... night (only 'Every' fits because 'some' needs to be followed by a noun in the plural form).
