Teacher Guide

At this level, your students should already know how comparatives and superlatives are formed and when they are used. Do a brief revision of this to make sure they are comfortable with these structures. Check that they recognise the keyword indicators '...than' (comparatives) and 'the....' (superlatives) as well as the regular endings '-er' (comparatives) and '-est' (superlatives). Go over some common irregular examples too.

Have them complete the sentences with a word of their choice and check that they've chosen correctly either a comparative or superlative. Have them read the sentences out loud and give other examples to reinforce it. This is an important part of learning grammatical structures: not just learning the rules, but recognising when it's appropriate to use them in normal communication. Build your students' confidence with plenty of encouragement (using comparatives and superlatives to help), such as "Great job, that's the best example I've heard all day!" or "Wow, that's even better than what I was going to suggest!".

Lesson Plan

:

05 Key Reading Part 2

05mins - Conversation: If you were famous, what would it be for? Have you ever met a famous person before? Do you think it would be fun to be famous? What are some challenges a famous person might have?

05mins - Review homework - Answer any questions the students may have

05mins - Revision: comparatives and superlatives - revise the students understanding of this grammar point.

15mins - Worksheet: 05 comparatives and superlatives

10mins - Activity: Class survey: students work in pairs to create a "survey for the class". They must write 5 questions using comparatives and superlatives such as "What is the best food" or "Where is the most beautiful place to go in the summer". After the students have written the questions, they trade papers and answer each other's questions.

15mins - Test: 05 writing practice - reading part 2

05mins - Warm down: Points, goodbye, see you next time!

00mins - Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.
