Teacher Guide

Explain that the passive voice is used when we don't know or don't want to emphasise who or what did the action. Give plenty of examples such as "the cake was eaten" compared with "I ate the cake". Point out that the past participle of the verb is used in all tenses of the passive voice. It's a good way for them to spot its use. They can refer to their list of past participles from lesson 9 if needed.

Have them convert the given sentences into a passive form, paying attention to the tense of the verb in the original sentence. Help the students identify and underline the object in each sentence to understand where to start their passive sentence. They can cross out the subject if that helps them remove the emphasis. Have them read out their answers and correct any mistakes.

Lesson Plan

:

20 Key Reading Part 5

05mins - Introduction: What type of work do you think you'd like to have in the future? Why are you interested in doing this job? What are the pros and cons of this type of work?

05mins - Review the online homework. What topics were discussed? Was the homework easy, medium or difficult? Answer any questions the students may have.10mins - Review: definitely - probably - perhaps - likely - will - might - chance - won’t. Have each student make predictions about the next year using these terms.

10mins - Pre-teach: Passive speaking - Correct tense of 'to be' + past participle. We use the passive when:

  • We don't know who did something. Ex: My phone was stolen.
  • The action is more important than who did it. Ex: The school was built in 1889.
  • It is obvious who or what did something. Ex: Justin Beiber is known for his music.

10mins - Worksheet: 20 passive speaking

15mins - Test: 20 reading practice - part 5

05mins - Warm down: what will you do this weekend?

00mins - Homework: complete the next section of the online homework.
