31 Key Listening Part 4

05mins - Introduction: Have students discuss hobbies and why they are important. Some questions to ask the student are: What do you consider to be the benefits of having a hobby? What types of hobbies do you have? Why do you like them? Do you think you will continue these hobbies when you are an adult? If you could try a new hobby, what would you choose?

10mins - Skill practice: Speaking -Tell the class you will be going to a special event. Students must ask questions to learn about the event. Write the following information on the whiteboard: Hobby Club bike ride. 15 Kilometres through Danwood Forest. Call Mary (075542) for more information. July 21. Bring picnic lunch. Cross out the information as students correctly ask for it.

10mins - Skill practice: Reading part 3 - Candidates must understand correct responses in conversations. Write questions from the 31 reading practice on the whiteboard, and have students think up possible answers. Discuss what information is being asked/discussed. Predict what responses an individual could have.

15mins - Exam Practice: 31 reading practice - part 4 - Review the answers.

15mins - Exam Practice: 31 listening practice - part 4 - Review the answers.

05mins - Warm down: what will you do this weekend?

00mins - Homework: Finish the online eLearning homework or go through your past worksheets.

Test Tip

1) Read all of the questions and think about the context.

2) The options may not repeat the exact words of the text, so read each option carefully.

3) Double check to make sure if you need to search for positive or negative information. (E.g. too, enough, not and comparatives/superlatives.)

4) The words in the question will be different than the words you hear in the text. Search for synonyms and antonyms.

5) The information is in order. Answer the questions as you listen, on the second listening, check them.

6) Each question is an isolated task, students will need to consider who is speaking and how many people are speaking in each question.

7) Remember that 'Thank you, but actually' or 'thanks, I'm okay' are negative.
