The first part of the worksheet is designed to have students review and practice using the past perfect tense. Each questions starts with a 'reference' action in the simple past and the students must complete the sentence with an action that happened before that, using the past perfect tense.
After the students have completed this section and shared their work out loud, discuss how this tense is useful in storytelling. Many stories are set in the past and we need a way to place actions before or after each other. The past perfect tense can give more information about the reason for or consequence of a character's actions.
Have the students think of an interesting location (for example a forest, a mountain, a desert, the schoolyard, a football stadium etc) and some characters they can describe. Help them brainstorm a storyline with some excitement or a problem to solve. Then have them write a story using the past tense. Explain that they should include at least two sentences in the past perfect tense.
Correct any errors they've made then have them read their stories out loud and encourage other students to ask follow-up questions. Have fun acting out any particularly entertaining scenes and encourage your students' humour and creativity!
05mins - Conversation: What is one exciting you have done in your life? How was this different from other experiences you have had? Do you hope to do it again someday?
05mins - Discuss the online homework. Ask students about any problems they're having.
10mins - Review: past perfect (had + past participle) We use past perfect to describe an action completed in the past before something else happened. Ex: I walked to school before it had started raining. Tell the students a story about a horrible dinner you went to. Describe a list of things that happened at this dinner, using the past perfect. (Ex: I arrived late, so my friends had already been seated at the table. They had ordered when they arrived, so my food came much later than theirs. I told a story that everyone had heard before, and I felt so embarrassed after! Etc...) When the story is finished, ask the students what happened at your horrible dinner! Have them remember each event while you make a list on the board.
