Teacher Guide

This worksheet helps students learn a few common phrasal verbs through examples and context. They'll need to revisit these often to get familiar with them and become confident in using them in spoken or written English.

Have them complete each gap with one of the options provided and discuss any they aren't sure of together. Give more examples of realistic scenarios when they might be used. Ask the students to come up with examples for the one not selected in each case.

We recommend revisiting phrasal verbs in every lesson and making it a general rule that your students must include at least one in conversation practice or writing exercises within your lessons. Practice makes perfect and there's no other effective way to learn phrasal verbs. Encourage your students to listen out for them in English music and TV series too.

Lesson Plan

:

17 PET Reading Part 5

10mins - Conversation: What do you think is the most useful device that has been invented in the last 20 years? Do you think technology reduces or increases stress? Why? What jobs do you think might be replaced by robots in the future? How has technology changed the way we communicate with each other?

05mins - Review the Mica eLearning online homework. What topics were discussed? Was the homework easy, medium or difficult? Answer any questions the students may have.

10mins - Pre-teach: Phrasal verbs - A verb that takes on a new meaning when combined with a preposition or adverb. Ex: 'figure out' - We need to figure out a solution. 'Take away' - Tomorrow I will take away the old furniture from the bedroom. 'Clean up' - Please clean up the materials when you are finished. Introduce 4 verbs, and have the students brainstorm possible phrasal verb combinations.

10mins - Activity: Phrasal verb match - Use the phrasal verb Mica flashcards to practice phrasal verb combinations. Ask the student(s) to use each combination in a sentence.

10mins - Worksheet: 17 phrasal verbs: have the students complete each gap with one of the options provided and discuss any they aren't sure of together.
