Teacher Guide

Explain that they need to choose to write either an article or a story. In both cases, it's important to read the instructions carefully and to write about 100 words. For the article teach the students some useful phrases for discussing their opinions, such as 'I think' 'I like/ don't like' 'In my opinion'. Explain that they should give reasons for each opinion expressed. For the story, remind them to use the past tense form of verbs. Explain that it is important to have a beginning, middle and end and they must use the prompt provided. Review pronouns and show them to pay attention to the names and/or pronouns used in the prompt.

Lesson Plan

:

04 PET Writing Part 2

10mins - Conversation: Ask the student to imagine what life was like for their great-grandparents. Have the student use the past perfect to talk about what the lives of their ancestors might have been like, then have the student compare/contrast their own life.

15mins - Pre-teach: Past perfect. (Had + past participle) We use past perfect to describe an action that was completed in the past before something else happened. Ex: I walked to school before it had started raining. We can use the past perfect with time expressions (when, after, by the time, as soon as) Ex: I had arrived at school as soon as it started raining. We can use also use them with adverbs such as just, already, ever (question only) and never. Please note the adverb goes between the auxiliary and main verbs. Ex: I had just arrived at school before it started raining.

15mins - Worksheet: 04 Past perfect

15mins - Test: Worksheet: 04 writing practice - part 2

05mins - Warm down: Discuss any material the student had difficulties with. Goodbye, see you next time!

00mins - Homework: Complete the next section of the online homework.

Test Tip

Students must choose between writing an article or a story. They must write around 100 words.

Article:

1) Plan the information you're going to write in your article by making an outline.

2) You'll need to give your own opinion about something.

3) Use your own words instead of just repeating the words in the article.

4) For each point you make, try providing one or two examples to back it up.

5) Talk about your own personal experience when writing the article.

For the story:

1) Students MUST begin the story with the opening sentence provided and continue with a clear link.

2) When writing the story, students should pay close attention to any names or pronouns used in the title or opening sentence.

-E.g. if the story begins in the third person, continue in that way.
