Teacher Guide

Lesson Plan

:

14 Proficiency Reading Part 5

15mins - Introduction: Conversation - Feminism. Discuss feminism with the student. Encourage them to give their personal opinion and insight on the topic, ask what role they think males play in feminism and encourage them to speak about any discussions they have had with friends/peers/family about the topic. Watch an exert from Malala Yousafzai's speech "Feminism is not complicated" and as a counter argument, read this article on 'equalism': https://www.theguardian.com/higher-education-network/blog/2013/jul/12/scientist-equalist-not-feminist

05mins - Revision: Bookwork - Discuss the chapters of the book that were set for homework at the end of the previous lesson.

05mins - Comprehension: Answer the comprehension questions that accompany the newly read chapter(s) of the book.

15mins - Test: 14 reading practice - part 5

Answers - C, B, B, A, A, B

15mins - Creative Task: The student is to create a character breakdown of three characters of their choice from the book they are studying and reading for the course.

Ensure the student uses the highest level of vocabulary they possibly can, strong linking expressions, persuasive language, and the correct tone. They must support their points with evidence from the book.

05mins - Warm down: I will set the student chapters of the book to read for homework whilst contemplating any new themes and/or characters that may have appeared.

Test Tip

1) Think about the voice - can you switch between active and passive voice?

2) Look at the words directly before and after the gap. If a past participle follows the gap, you know you'll need the auxiliary verb 'have/had' in your response.

3) Do not use fewer than three or more than eight words.

4) Do not modify the key word in any way.

5) Contractions count as two words.

6) Keep in mind comparative forms, phrasal verbs, colloquial phrases and inverted structures.
