10mins - Introduction: Conversation - Sleep Deprivation. Show the student the following video: https://www.ted.com/talks/claudia_aguirre_what_would_happen_if_you_didn_t_sleep
Discuss the video with the student and encourage them to speak about their thoughts on the matter. Ask if they have ever suffered from this and if they did what they would do to try to remedy the problem. Ask the student what sort of things might cause an issue such as this.
20mins - Book work. Discuss the chapters of the book that were set for homework. Instruct the student to give descriptions of the characters and themes that they have encountered in their reading and have an in depth discussion about the book.
15mins - 20 reading practice - part 7
15mins - Creative Task: Album Review. The student is to write a review of an album that has had a big impact on their life. They are to read some examples of album reviews from prominent music websites such as Pitchfork, DIY Magazine, and the new music sections of newspapers such as The Guardian or The New York Times. The piece of writing should be emotive, descriptive and factual (in the sense that it contains trivia and information about the album and the artist). The piece of writing should be around 220 words, written in an appropriate tone and share stylistic choices with other pieces of music journalism.
05mins - Warm down: I will set the student chapters of the book to read for homework whilst contemplating any new themes and/or characters that may appear.
1) In this part, there's an emphasis on locating specific information, detail and opinion or attitude in a text or group of short texts.
2) Avoid seeing this part as an exercise that merely requires you to match information. The task is designed to test understanding of the development of ideas, opinion and events rather than the recognition of individual words.
3) Skimming and scanning skills are very important for this task, as it requires re-finding information quickly and accurately. Help yourself by underlining and labelling information to the best of your abilities.
4) Some of the options may be correct for more than one answer.
5) You will need to match the questions with relevant information.
