Teacher Guide

Lesson Plan

:

22 Proficiency Writing Part 2

10mins - Introduction: Conversation - Vegetarianism:

Have a debate based on the following topic: Some people believe that we shouldn't eat meat. Do you agree or disagree with this belief? Do you eat meat? Have you ever considered being a vegetarian?

Follow up:

1. Which lifestyle do you think is healthier, that of a meat-eater, or that of a carnivore. Why?

2. Do you consider yourself to have a healthy diet? What foods do you eat most often?

20mins - Book work. Discuss the chapters of the book that were set for homework. Instruct the student to give descriptions of the characters and themes that they have encountered in their reading and have an in depth discussion about the book.

15mins - 22 writing practice - part 2

15mins - Creative Task: Plan short story writing. Inform the student that they will be writing their own short story. Have them share their screen in order to make collaborative notes. Brainstorm genres and writers together and have them decide what sort of story they would like to write and begin the planning process.

05mins - Warm down: I will set the student chapters of the book to read for homework whilst contemplating any new themes and/or characters that may appear.

Test Tip

1) In part 2, there are 5 task options of which the candidates are expected to choose 1 to write about. The tasks can include an article, a letter, a report a review or an essay. The essay will contain questions based on set texts. In order to respond to this question, candidates will need to have read these texts prior to taking the exam. The texts can be found on the Cambridge English website. Responses should be written in 280-320 words.

2) Students should be comfortable with responding to at least three of the question types. This will help them be prepared to choose the response most suitable for reflecting their writing skills.

3) Responses will be assessed based on the following criteria: content, communicative achievement, organisation and language.

4) Students should read as much as possible in English, and keep a notebook to store new vocabulary words. Students should categorise their words into semantic fields.

5) Students should use appropriate tone and language in their response, being sure to answer the question in full and avoid going off-topic.

6) Students will need to be able to demonstrate a wide range of grammatical structures, including perfect tenses, passive voice, subject-verb inversion, comparative forms and task-related fixed expressions.
