Start by asking what day it is today. Then ask what day it was yesterday. Then give some examples of things that are happening today, and things that happened yesterday, until the students have understood that when you talk about yesterday you're talking about the past. Then show them how to change each of the verbs provided into the past, still using the days as reference points for the present and the past. It can be helpful to write 'today (present)' and 'yesterday (past)' on the board side by side, so you can use the 2 columns when you talk about or write the verbs.
For example "Today we eat pasta, yesterday we ate pizza", "Today we study English, yesterday we studied mathematics"...
Teach what each of the time expressions (last week, last month...etc) mean then have them construct 1 sentence for each of the verbs. For example "Last year I played basketball".
Try to use some simple verbs in the past in each future lesson to help the students become familiar with them. For example "Yesterday I saw a good movie" "Last week I ate pizza".
