Have the students form each word and give examples for each word as they work, always emphasising that it's in the past by adding specific time expressions such as 'yesterday' and 'last year'.
Repeat the words out loud several times, to help them get familiar with the pronunciation. Especially 'walked' which many students mistakenly pronounce as "walk-ed" instead of "walkt".
Help them to write down their favourite example sentences then read them out loud.
Continue to use verbs in the past tense during lessons to reinforce their use in a natural setting. Such as '"esterday I ran to the shop because it was raining" "last year I saw a scary movie"...etc.
