Teacher Guide

Help the students to understand the action described in each sentence and ask them if they like or don't like doing that action. They need to complete each sentence with 'I like' or 'I don't like', then illustrate the activity in the box.

Lesson Plan

:

23 - Year 1 Lesson plan

10mins: Introduction - Beginner questions: What's your name, age, and where are you from? Have you got any brothers or sisters? Can you ride a bike? Can you swim? Ask the student some questions using 'can'. Encourage them to respond in complete sentences. (E.g. Yes, I can swim.)

05mins: Review: 'How many are there?' The teacher will put a certain number of (books, pens, pencils, rubbers, etc) on a desk, then ask students 'How many _______ are there?' Students will respond 'There are (number) (object)'. Change the object/number each round.

05mins: Review - 'can' - brainstorm a list of animals with the class. Then, ask students questions about whether those animals can or can't do certain things. E.g. Can a fish walk? Can a bird swim? etc. Then, ask each student 'What can you do?'

10mins: Pre-teach: I like - Ask students to brainstorm a list of verbs. Write them on the board in the gerund form. (E.g. jumping, swimming, singing, laughing, eating.) Then, draw a smiley face next to some of the ones you like. Say 'I like ____(action).' Ask students which actions they like. Have them answer in complete sentences. Then, draw a frown-y face next to some foods you don't like. Say 'I don't like _____(action). Ask students which actions they don't like.

Extension: Ask the students to give you more information about the actions. E.g. Where do you like swimming? Where don't you like swimming? What do you like singing? What don't you like singing? What do you like eating? What don't you like eating?

15mins: Worksheet: 23 - I like

10mins: Activity: Telephone: Split the students into two teams. The teams will sit on the floor in a circle. Say a sentence to the first student by whispering it in their ear. They must then whisper it to the next student. The message will go around the circle until it arrives at the last person. This person must stand up and say the sentence. If they are correct, the team earns one point. Focus on using 'I like/don't like' + actions.

05mins: Warm Down: Goodbye + points. Pack up supplies, help students prepare to leave and straighten out the classroom.
