Teacher Guide

Review that we use 'am' for the pronoun 'I', and 'are' for the pronouns 'you, we, you (plural) and they', and 'is' for the pronouns 'he, she and it'. Then teach that when using the past tense, 'am' and 'is' become 'was' and 'are' becomes 'were'. Have the students complete the sentences, choosing whether to use 'was' or 'were' in each case. Have them read the sentences out loud.

Lesson Plan

:

28 - Year 4 Lesson plan

10mins: Introduction - Beginner questions 'What's your name, how old are you, where are you from, have you got any brothers or sisters? What's your favourite day of the week? What do you usually do on this day? What's one thing you like? One thing you don't like? What's one thing you can do? One thing you can't do?

  • Extension: ask students to write two questions on a piece of paper. Then, students trade papers with a classmate and write responses to each other's questions.

10mins: Game: Review 'before' and 'after'. Then, have students stand in a circle. Use two different coloured bean bags. Indicate that one colour means 'before' and the other colour means 'after'. Say a month of the year, and toss the bean bags to two different students. They must say either the month 'before' or 'after' the month you've said, depending on the colour of their bean bag. If a student is incorrect, they are eliminated.

05mins: Review present continuous. Play 'you are verbING'.

10mins: Pre-teach: Was/were - the past tense of the verb 'to be'. Discuss which pronouns agree with which verb.

10mins: You were there! A game to practice was/were - Have all students except for one stand in a line. Let student 1 look at the line for ten seconds then close their eyes while the others scramble the line and take a new position. The student opens their eyes then has to put them back into the original order saying 'You were there, he was there etc'.

10mins: Worksheet: page 29 - 'was/were'.
