Teacher Guide

Review the structure of 'subject + verb to be + present continuous verb' and review the previous worksheet as a reminder of how to choose the correct form of the verb 'to be'. Remind them that most verbs ending with 'e' drop the 'e' when adding 'ing'. Practice describing people by pointing at the people in the picture and using adjectives. Have the students choose any characters from the picture and form sentences to describe what they are doing.

Lesson Plan

:

05 - Year 5 Lesson plan

10mins: Introduction - 'Whats your name, how old are you, where are you from? What's one adjective that describes you? Have you got any brothers or sisters?'

05mins: Review: Adjectives - brainstorm a list of adjectives together. Think of examples for each one.

05mins: Review: Present continuous - 'to be' + verbING. Brainstorm and write some examples on the whiteboard.

10mins: Activity: Do an action for the class. The students must write a sentence saying what you're doing. (E.g. the teacher is singing). Then, ask a student to come to the front of the class and do a different action. The students must write a sentence about what their classmate is doing. Continue until every student has had a turn.

15mins: Worksheet: page 06 - present continuous

10mins: Review: 'Present continuous' - Line students up against the wall. Choose one student to go first. They will face the students so they can see what each student is doing. When the teacher says go, each student in the line will mime a different action. (e.g. brushing their teeth, playing guitar, riding a bicycle). The student whose turn it is will describe the actions of their classmates, using the present continuous.

05mins: Warm Down: Goodbye + points
