After introducing the prepositions of time 'at, in , on', have the students complete the sentences then read them out loud. There are helpful resource cards available on our site to illustrate when to use which preposition.
10mins: Introduction - Beginner questions 'What's your name, how old are you, where are you from, have you got any brothers or sisters? What's your favourite day of the week? What do you usually do on this day? What's one thing you like? One think you don't like?
15mins: Pre-teach: Prepositions of time - 'in' 'on' and 'at'. Draw an inverted triangle and separate it into three sections. Write 'In' at the top level, where the space is the biggest. 'On' at the second level, and 'At' at the third level, where the space is the smallest. Use this as a visual aide to help students understand that 'In' is used for more general periods of time (years, months) on is slightly more specific (days) and at is the most specific (times).
15mins: Worksheet: page 12 - time - in, on and at
15mins: Activity: Time showdown - split the students into two teams. One student from each team will come to the front of the classroom at a time. The teacher will give a sentence with a missing preposition (e.g. I went to England ____ 2010.) The student who writes the correct answer first will earn a point for their team.
05mins: Warm Down: Goodbye + points. Pack up supplies, help students prepare to leave and straighten out the classroom.
