Explain that when we use 'did' or 'didn't' we don't need to change the verb into the past tense. For example note the verb form of 'eat' in these two examples: "Yesterday I ate pizza" c.f. "Yesterday I didn't eat pizza".
Teach that the verb 'to be' doesn't need the word 'didn't' when being used in the past in the negative form. It is combined just with 'not'. "I wasn't angry." "It wasn't cold".
Have the students complete the sentences and read them out loud.
